RI aims to reduce oil consumption, up coal, new energy

The national energy policy is directed at reducing the domestic consumption of oil and gas, and increases the use of coal and new energy and renewable energy, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik said.
?The direction of the national energy policy is for the reduction in the role of oil and gas, and increasing the role of coal, new energy, and renewable energy,? said Jero on Tuesday at a meeting of the National Energy Council (DEN).
Jero said that currently oil accounts for about 49 percent, gas 20 percent, and coal 24 percent in the country?s energy mix. .
?Going forward, we?ll reduce the consumption of petroleum-based fuel to help reduce the (fuel) subsidy,? he said.
Meanwhile, DEN member Herman Darnel said the council projected that by 2025, the electricity sector will consume about 3.4 tcf of gas, a 183 percent surge compared to the consumption level in 2010 of 1.2 tcf.
DEN is also optimistic that the national gas consumption could be sufficiently supplied by local production with the current new exploration efforts being carried out to find new gas sources.
