RI developing sea-currents-based power plants

State-owned electricity company PT PLN and PT. SBS International Ltd of the United Kingdom have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on developing sea-currents-based power plants with each having a generation capacity of 12 MW, in the straits of Alas and Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and in Badung Strait, Bali province.
The MOU was signed on Wednesday on the sidelines of the new and renewable energy conference and exhibition, which will procedd until August 21 in Jakarta Convention Center.
The sea-currents-based power plants will be the first of its kind in Indonesia. Their capacity will be increased in stages from 12 MW to 140 MW based on available potential with an investment of US$ 350 million.
The marine-based power plant projects will reduce the consumption of oil fuels in Indonesia. It will also accelerate the commercial development of marine renewable energy sources.
