RI-Japan teams up in coal liquidation project

The ministry of energy and mineral resources? research and development unit has teamed up with a Japanese research agency called Nedo in a coal liquidation project which would transform coal into fuel product.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said Thursday that the coal would be purchased from the state-owned Bukit Asam Batubara at US$8-10 per ton.

He said that the project was expected to be able to produce some 125,000 barrel per day of oil equivalent.

He added that if the coal liquidation project would be followed up with setting up a special refinery plant in South Sumatra if necessary, possibly in 2005-2006. (Godang)
