RI, Lithuania to cooperate in renewables sector

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan signed on Wednesday a MoU with visiting Energy Minister of Lithuania, Zygimantas Vaiciunas on cooperation in the renewables sector.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said in a statement that the signing of the MoU was witnessed by President Joko Widodo and visiting President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite at the State Palace.

The statement said that the MoU is expected to increase investment from Lihuania in the Indonesian renewables sector, as well as to increase cooperation in the sector between the two countries in the forms of joint projects, transfer of technology, research and development, and capacity building.

Following the signing of the MoU, the ministry held the Indonesia-Lithuania Business Energy Forum, which was opened by Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arcandra Tahar. Arcandra said in the statement that the cooperation between Indonesia and Lithuania will be focused on the development biomass sector in Indonesia. He said that biomass has played vital role in Lithuania?s energy mix.

The statement said that Lithuania has a biomass exchange system which makes the biomass market transparent, efficient, and encourages competition and eliminates biomass price differences. Lithuania currently has biomass technology which have been developed by 20 companies operating in the biofuel industry.

Arcandra said that the cooperation with Lithuania forms part of efforts of the government to help realize the target for renewables to account for 23 percent Indonesia?s energy mix by 2025.
