The government is planning to develop 11,000 MW of power plants fueled by new and renewable energy sources such as geothermal, hydro, solar, and bioenergy over the next five years, which would require total investment of up to US$36 billion.

Director General of New and Renewable Energy Rida Mulyana said in a statement Tuesday that of the government?s plant to develop a total of 35,000 MW until 2019, about 11,000 MW will come from renewable energy sources, and 25,000 MW from coal.

Rida said that in a bid to lure investment in the renewable energy sector, the government was ready to issue ?investor friendly? regulations, pointing out, for instance, that a new geothermal law has been recently approved by the House of Representatives to attract investment.

Installed power capacity from renewable energy sources currently stands at 10,700 MW, compared to the country?s totaled installed power capacity of 52,000 MW.

The planned additional renewable energy-based power capacity will among others come from geothermal (estimated at about 4,926.5 MW), hydro (13,393 MW), bioenergy (2,872 MW), and solar (247.41 MW).
