RI seeks Japan?s help for methane gas hydrates research

The government of Indonesia has proposed to Japan for a joint research on methane gas hydrates in the deep sea, which could potentially become an alternative source of energy in the future.
The proposal was made during the first Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum in Japan last week by Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, A. Edy Hermantoro, who then led the Indonesian delegation.
According to Edy, a joint cooperation was needed considering the huge funding requirement to carry out research on methane gas hydrates.
The ministry said in a statement, received Friday, that during the meeting, the two nations agreed to foster cooperation and investment potentials in developing deep water projects in Indonesia. In addition, Japan is also seeking for long-term cooperation with Indonesian in the area of LNG supply as part of efforts to help ensure Japan?s energy security.
Japan also welcomes Indonesia?s offers for increase cooperation in the electricity sector, and renewable energy, and hopes to be able to assist in developing various projects in Indonesia including the low rank coal gasification project in Sumatra.
