RI, South Korea plan nuclear cooperation

Indonesia and South Korea are considering cooperation to build nuclear power plants that are expected to produce up to 4,000 Megawatt by 2025.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Monday that the construction of the power plants was expected to start in 2011.

A nuclear power generating unit with a capacity of 1,000 MW is expected to be built in 2011. After that, three other units, each with the capacity of 1,000 MW will be built through 2025.

Purnomo made the statement in Jakarta in a ceremony to mark the departure of Indonesian haj pilgrims to Mecca as well as in a speech read out during the sixth CoalTech conference in Bali.

He however did not provide details on the future location of the power plants.

In Jakarta, Purnomo also said aside form the nuclear cooperation, Indonesia and South Korea are pondering a cooperation in mining. (Godang/Alex)
