RI to be able to build 300,000 DWT vessels, LNG carriers

The Indonesian shipping industry is projected to be able to build vessels with capacity of up to 300,000 DWT by 2025, according to the shipping industry development roadmap issued by the Ministry of Industry.
Director General for High Technology Based Strategic Industries, Budi Darmadi said in a statement obtained Tuesday that the focus of the national shipping industry is to build the 300,000 DWT-capacity vessels so as to reduce import.
He said that in line with the road map, the national industry as of last year has already have the capacity to build vessels including tankers with capacity of up to 50,000 DWT as well as ability to repair vessels with capacity of up to 150,000 DWT.
The target for 2015 is for the industry to be able to build vessels with capacity of up to 85,000 DWT, he said. By 2020, the country should be able to build vessels with capacity of up to 200,000 DWT.
Elsewhere, Budi also said that Indonesia will be able to build CNG and LNG carriers within the next 3-4 years. To help support the government?s fuel to gas conversion program among households, the country will require 30 units of LNG carriers with capacity of 40,000 Cum to distribute gas among the islands.
He said that LNG carrier is a high-tech industry, therefore it is crucial for the country to master the technology.
