The Riau Province Legislative Council approved late on Tuesday the proposed bylaw on electricity, ending the monopoly of state-owned electricity firm PLN in providing power in the province.

?There are plenty of positive effects of the by law,? law maker Zukri told Riauterkini.com.

He pointed out as an example that according to the bylaw, in case of electricity shortage, private power producers can supply electricity to the provincial government, thus ending the monopoly role of PLN. ?This means that we don?t have to rely on electricity supply from PLN. Private companies can sell electricity to the provincial government.?

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday, Bengkalis Regent Herliyan Saleh inaugurated the supply of excess power (about 1MW) from palm oil firm PT Meskom Agro Sarimas to PLN?s network in Bengkalis.

Herliyan said that the supply of excess power is a form of the seriousness of the private sector in help to increase electricity supply in the regency. (*)
