Riau to export power to Malaysia

The Indonesian and Malaysian governments were mulling co-developing a coal-fired power plant in the Kuantan Singingi regency in Riau to supply power to the regional power grid linking Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the Riau governor said.

Saleh Djasit said Kuntan Singingi was selected to be the location of the power plant given its rich coal resources.

He said he had been informed in a recent visit to Malaysia that Malaysian Minister of Energy, Communication and Multimedia and Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources had "agreed" on the plan to develop the power plant, local daily Riau Post reported.

"Today, there are intensive talks between both ministers," Saleh said, adding that Malaysian investors were keen to realize the project.

He said the project had been long planned but talks on the plan had been cancelled after the economic crisis hit the region in the middle of 1997. (*)
