Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto recorded gold production of its 90 percent subsidiary PT Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM) during the third quarter of 2001 was 130,000 ounces, significantly higher than last year?s corresponding period production of 103,000 ounces.
Third quarter gold production was also far higher than 2001-second quarter production of 96,000 ounces.
The company said in its quarterly statement Wednesday the increase was due dry weather during the quarter that provided full access to the mining area and higher ore grade processed.
KEM, which operates a gold mine in West Kutai regency, East Kalimantan, plans to close down the mine in 2004 due to resource depletion. (alex)
