World mining giant Rio Tinto said Wednesday during the second quarter of 2003 its Indonesian unit, PT Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM), had produced some 112,000 ounces of gold, lower than the previous quarter?s 184,000 ounces.
Rio Tinto said however that ore treated during the second quarter of 2003 was consistent with prior quarters. ?During the second quarter of 2003, mining activities ceased and lower grade stockpiled ore was processed,? the company said in its quarterly report.
The company said further that silver production had also decreased to 96,000 ounces from previously quarter of 112,000 ounces.
KEM, Rio Tinto?s 90 percent subsidiary, had operated a gold mine in Kelian in West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan.
KEM will cease mining in 2003 but processing will continue until 2004. (robert)
