World mining giant Rio Tinto said Monday during the first quarter of 2003 its Indonesian unit PT Kelian Equatorial Mining had produced some 184,000 ounces of gold, an improvement from the previous quarter of 121,000 ounces

Rio Tinto said the increase was due to the higher-grade ore treated.

Rio Tinto said silver production had also increased to 112,000 ounces from previously quarter of 75,000 ounces.

KEM, Rio Tinto?s 90 percent subsidiary, had operated a gold mine in Kelian in West Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan.
