Indian engineering firm RITES Ltd has been engaged by another Indian firm Reliance Energy Group for a study to set up rail and port infrastructure for their coal project in Indonesia, a release by government of India?s Press Information Bureau said on Monday.

The release did not give detail.

Reliance acquired last year three coal mines in South Sumatra which spread over a 40,000 hectares area.

Reliance, which is a unit of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group planned to invest around US$ 1 billion in mine and related transportation infrastructure to take the capacity of these mines to over 25 million tonnes per annum, media reports said last year.

The mines have total reserves worth two billion metric tonne.

Coal from the mines would be supplied to Reliance Power?s 4,000-MW ultra mega power project at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and also to the 2,800 MW Shahapur power project in Maharashtra. (alex)
