Russia proposes floating nuclear power plant

Russia has offered Indonesia a "floating nuclear- power plant" to deal with potential future power shortages, a report said on Sunday.

"Russia has offered us a floating nuclear power plant," State Minister of Research and Technology M. Hatta Radjasa told Indonesian media in Bucharest where he was accompanying President Megawati Sukarnoputri on a visit.

Speaking before leaving to Moscow, Hatta was quoted byAntara as saying that it was time Indonesia had such a nuclear power plant in anticipation of potential power shortages in 2015-17.

"Such a power plant can be used in many regions," he said.

He said the power plant, to be built on a ship, would have a capacity of 40 megawatts but provided no other details, including the price.

He also said that the Russians had offered to build Indonesia's first rocket and satellite launch pad on Biak island in northern Papua. (*)
