S. Kalimantan seeks presidential decree to curb illegal coal mining
Thursday, July 14 2005 - 03:11 AM WIB
The provincial administration of South Kalimantan is waiting for the issuance of a presidential decree to curb illegal coal mining operations, the Kompas newspaper reported in its Thursday edition.
The province badly needs such a decree as its efforts to curb the illegal coal mining activities has thus far brought no fruits. The illegal miners pay no taxes (thus causing losses on the state) and has no environmental protection program (thus cusing severe damage on the environment).
This was disclosed by South Kalimantan Governor Tursandi during a meeting with the House of Representatives' Commission VII team lead by Alvin Lie in Banjarmasin on Wednesday.(*)
