The Samarinda Legislative Council in East Kalimantan has recommended a temporary suspension of the coal mining operation of PT Lanna Harita Indonesia until land dispute with a number of local cooperatives had been settled.
The Metro Balikpapan daily reported on Friday that the suspension was needed to avoid greater conflict with the local community.
The paper said that the decision was taken during a meeting between legislators and representatives of the cooperatives, which had claimed ownership on some 60 land being exploited by Lanna Harita, a joint venture between local and Thailand investors.
The paper said that the council would also form a special team to resolve the problem.(*)
