The Samarinda municipality in East Kalimantan has suspended mining permits of two mining companies CV Puang Cakra Buana and CV Mutiara Coal following the local government?s monthly evaluation on the mining activities in the area, Kaltimpost.co.id reported.

The head of the environmental and mining office, Endang Liansyah, said in Samarinda last week that the permits of the two miners were temporarily suspended because they failed to manage the environment in their mining areas properly.

Endang said that the water flooding from the mining areas were hazardous because the two firms did not operate water treatments in line with the existing standards. The poor drainage system has also caused flooding in the nearby area.

Meanwhile, Tribunnews.com reported that the Samarinda municipality had also issued a strong warning to two miners Lanna Harita Indonesia (LHI) and Buana Rizky Armin (BRA), also due to their poor drainage systems.

The local government blamed the poor drainage systems at the two miners had caused a big flooding at the Siring river near the Samarina city recently. The SMP 19 junior high school was inundated during the flood.

The Samarinda municipality conducts a monthly evaluation on mining operations located within the municipality. Besides permit suspension, the local government also issues a strong warning to those which ignore the environment regulation. (*)
