The second unit of the 3x110 MW Sarulla geothermal power plant project in Tapanuli Utara Regency, North Sumatra Province, is scheduled to be onstream at the end of September, according to a senior official at Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

"Based on their report last week, the CoD (commercial operation date) of unit 2, (is) on target, (it) will be by the end of September," Director General of New and Renewables Energy at the ministry Rida Mulyana told Petromindo.com Friday.

He said President Joko Widodo is expected to inaugurate the operation of the project.

President Director of PT Medco Power Indonesia (MPI) Fazil Erwin Alfitri said earlier that the second 110 MW Sarulla geothermal power plant will supply electricity to the North Sumatra system. The first unit of 110MW started operation on March 18.

Fazil said the third unit is targeted to start operation in May of 2018.

MPI is a member of a consortium called Sarulla Operations Ltd assigned to develop the Sarulla geothermal power plant project, dubbed as one of the largest in the world. Other members of the consortium are Itochu, Ormat and Kyushu Electric.
