Thursday, August 31 2000 - 03:00 AM WIB

The SBSI labor union asked the management of copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) to include labor issue in renewing contract of existing sub contractors.

SBSI said in a press statement that NNT sub contractors have largely violated labor rights.

"The management of the sub contractors have also been making campaign through youth organization or informal leaders to influence the community to reject the existence of SBSI," the labor union said.

SBSI pointed out several NNT sub contractors, which had violated labor rights including PT Prasmindo Boga Utama, PT Kijang Lombok Raya, PT ODG Walkman Indonesia, and PT Bilfinger Barger Indonesia. The employees at these sub contractors had staged a protest to demand their rights.

Meanwhile, the SBSI welcome the NNT management for accepting the presence of the labor union in the company. During a recent meeting with SBSI, NNT executive director Richard Ness said that the company had no policy to reject the presence of any labor union, and allow its employees to freely choose which labor union they want to join.
