SBSI senior executive becomes a suspect in relation with protest at Vico

Muaya Kawilarang, the coordinator of the prominent SBSI labor union in East Kalimantan, has been detained by the local police since Saturday, and after a marathon of questioning, he became a suspect on Monday, the local Kaltim Post daily reported.

"He has officially become a suspect. And he has been under the detention of the East Kaltim Police," public relations chief of the East Kalimantan Police Superintendent Faah Sumarno.

Faah said that Muaya was charged with provoking labors to take hostage during a labor strike at oil and gas firm Vico Indonesia.

He said that the maximum sanction for such a crime was six months in jail.

Hundreds of employees of Vico sub contractors recently held a strike organized by the SBSI labor union. The protesting labors also made a road blockade causing the company to temporarily shut down operation.

Many companies have complained the activity of the SBSI labor union. Some have even suggested the government expel SBSI from the province. (*)
