SBY inaugurates PLTU Asam-Asam Unit 3 & 4

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) inaugurated on Wednesday the operation of Unit 3 and 4 at PLTU Asam-Asam coal fired power plant in South Kalimantan.

The new power generation units were among several projects inaugurated by the President at the ceremony held at South Kalimantan?s governor office in Banjarbaru, which also marked the ground breaking of several projects in the province.

The President was accompanied by several ministers during the visit to the province.

State owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said the PLTU Asam-Asam Unit 3 and 4 each have the capacity of 65 MW. Both have been developed with a total investment of Rp 1.72 trillion.

The project is part of the First Phase 10,000 Power Plant Fast Track Development program of PLN. Located in Asam-Asam village, Jorong district, Tanah Laut regency, both power units have actually been operating for than a year. The Unit 1 came into operation on March 24, 2012, while the Unit 4 started operation on Nov. 7, 2012. Both new power units have brought the total capacity of PLTU Asam-Asam to 260 MW, PLN said in a statement.

According to PLN, PLTU Asam-Asam is now the main supplier of electricity to both South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan provinces. With an installed capacity of 260 MW, the power plant accounts for 67 percent of the peak lead in both provinces which reach 386 MW.

It is the only power plant owned by PLN which uses coal as fuel.

The construction of the Unit 3 and 4 was handled by the consortium of state owned Wijaya Karya and Chinese construction firm Chengda.
