Local oil firm PT Semberani Persada Oil (Semco) has started supplying gas to the 3x60-Megawatt Tanjung Batu power plant in East Kalimantan to add gas supply to the power plant, Kaltim Post reported on Friday.

“We are very happy that electricity shortage (in the region) could be settled step by step. We hope PT Semco can supply gas maximally so that electricity supply to the communities can be maximized,” said Samarinda Major Achmad Amins in his written address upon inaugurating the maiden supply of gas on Thursday.

Semco's general manager Listianto S said the gas was sourced from the Binangat well and the company plan to operate Sambutan well to add supplies.

“Until today, gas production from Binangat is around 6 – 7 MMSCFD and can be increased to 13 MMSCFD,” he said.

Semco is the subsidiary of publicly-listed PT Energi Mega Persada. It operates the Semberah field under a technical assistance contract (TAC) with state owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina. In 2005, the company and state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)  signed a contract to supply about 15 MMCFD of gas from Semberah field to the Tanjung Batu power plant. PLN would pay between US$2.8 and $3 per million British thermal unit for the gas supplies. (*)
