Cement giant PT Semen Indonesia plans to build a 28 MW power plant in Tuban, East Java, claimed to be environmentally friendly as the company would utilize the waste heat produced by four of its cement plants in the region to fire the power plant?s turbine, Kontan daily reported on Monday.

The company has signed an MoU with JFE Engineering, one of Japan?s leading firms engaged in the development environmentally friendly energy. ?The (planned) power plant is environmentally friendly because it will not use fuel nor coal,? said Semen Indonesia Corporate Secretary, Agung Wiharto, adding that the heat produced by the company?s four cement plants in Tuban would no longer be wasted once the power plant is built.

He said that the company has built a similar power plant at its cement operation in Padang, West Java, in 2011, producing electricity with a capacity of 8 MM.

Agung said that the electricity to be produced by the Tuban power plant will be supplied to the company?s cement operation in Tuban, which requires about 200 MW of electricity supply, currently supplied entirely by state-utility PLN. (*)
