Shell eyeing LPG business

Anglo-Dutch energy giant Royal Dutch Shell Plc said it was eager to develop liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) business in Indonesia but would  not realize its plan until the market is conducive to the business.

Shell Indonesia’s new Country Chairman Darwin Silalahi said in Jakarta on Tuesday that LPG business has a good prospect but the company was still waiting for the right moment to enter the market.

“What will encourage us to delve into a particular business sector is the presence of the similar level of playing field,” he said.

According to Darwin, Shell took a keen interest in developing LPG business because of the government's program aimed to p-push the public to use LPG instead of highly-subsidized kerosene.

“We are now watching over the market and the initiative that the government will take. When the market structure helps us to be more efficient, then we will offer LPG products,” he said.

The company, which currently has a low presence in the country's upstream sector, is agressively expanding its business in the country's gasoline retail sector. It has built dozens of fuel stations across the country over the past two years. (Godang)
