The students grouped in the Amperkasi students alliance reached an agreement to oppose the blockade plan during a heated meeting in the regency on Tuesday afternoon.
The students leader, Tengku Sulaiman, said that the people of Siak should defend the CPP oil block from any attempt to blockade the oil block from irresponsible people from outside of the regency.
The CPP block, one of several oil blocks operated by PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPP) in Riau Province, is located in the Siak regency.
Some groups of people have planned to blockade the oil block on Thursday (tomorrow) as a protest against the government?s decision to extend Caltex?s contract over the oil block to another one year.
In Jakarta on Tuesday, the leaders of the Riau province agreed the extension of the contract after Caltex agreed to meet the Riau demand to improve its community development and to involve the local in the top management of the oil block.
The local leaders promised to halt any plan to blockade the CPP oil block after the compensation agreement was reached. Earlier they threatened to stage mass protest against the contract extension. (*)
