Sibolga power project to be resumed

Independent power producer PT Tenaga Listrik Sibolga is making final preparations to resume the construction of its 2x100-megawatt coal fired power plant in Sibolga, North Sumatra, an official of state electricity firm PLN said Friday.

?We are making final preparations to resume the project,? said Monang N.T. Sirumpea, head of PLN?s office overseeing power plants and power transmission systems in North Sumatra and Aceh.

Monang said the construction stage would start in early 2004 for 36 months.

He also said that coal for the power plant would be supplied by state coalminer PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam and other coal producers from Kalimantan.

The Sibolga power plant was among the 27 power projects suspended by the government in 1998 after severe economic crisis hit Indonesia.

Investors of the 27 projects and PLN had signed contacts to supply electricity to the latter.

President Megawati Soekarnoputri in July relaunched some of the 27 projects after their investors and PLN reached new agreements on power price. (godang)
