The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has shortlisted five companies to submit tender proposals for the feasibility study on import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Singapore.

The five firms shortlisted are Norway's Aker Kvaerner Engineering, US-based Foster Wheeler Eastern, Japan's Tokyo Gas Engineering, Shell Global Solutions, and Schlumberger Business Consulting.

EMA said in a statement on Tuesday that closing date for the submission of the tender proposals is 15 Dec 2004, while results of the tender is expected to be announced in Jan 2005.

EMA is conducting a feasibility study on the import of LNG to Singapore as an option to further diversify its sources of natural gas.

According to the agency, the study will evaluate the business, financial and technical aspects of LNG import and recommend the most efficient and cost effective method. It will also identify suitable site(s) for the LNG terminal.

?The feasibility study is expected to be completed in 12 months. An LNG terminal which is required for the import of LNG would take 6-7 years to build,? EMA added.

Currently, about 60 percent of Singapore?s electricity demand is generated from natural gas via three pipelines running from Indonesia and Malaysia. (Robert)
