SKK Migas sets up Indonesia Oil and Gas Institute

The upstream oil and gas authority SKK Migas on Tuesday (30/04) forms an institute, called Indonesia Oil and Gas Institute (IOGI), aiming at supporting the development of the country’s upstream oil and gas industry.

“To support a more effective, efficient upstream oil and gas business and in an effort to realize national energy sovereignty and equitable energy, on this occasion we officially introduce the Indonesia Oil and Gas Institute (IOGI)," said the Head of SKK Migas Dwi Soetjipto when launching the institute.

The launching of the institute was attended by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arcandra Tahar at the SKK Migas Office, Jakarta.

IOGI, said Soetjipto, will help make SKK Migas as the center of excellence and knowledge in the upstream oil and gas business in the country. IOGI will provide data and information to potential investors and therefore stimulate the growth of investment in the upstream oil and gas sector.

In the long-run, the IOGI will support the government’s drive to increase the hydrocarbon reserves, oil and gas lifting as well as the optimization of operational costs, said Soetjipto.

SKK Migas said in a statement that it has mapped out potential giant discoveries, including in North Sumatera, Central Sumatera, Tarakan Offshore, North East Java-Makassar Strait, Kutai Offshore, Buton Offshore, Northern Papua, Bird Body Papua and Warim Papua.

Based on the mapping, IOGI evaluates additional 19 basins that have 126 proven plays and could have resources potential of 8.3 billion barrels of oil. In addition, there are five basins that have the potential for giant and significant discoveries, namely, North Sumatera basin, South Sumatera, North East Java, Kutai and Pre-Tertiary Passive Margin.

SKK Migas believes that Indonesia still has the potential to make two giant fields discoveries with potential resources of 770 mboe.
