PT Sulawesi Mining Investment (SMI) plans to develop a 2x350 MW coal-fired power plant in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, primarily to support the expansion of its nearby nickel pig iron (NPI) smelter and stainless steel plant.

SMI Vice President Director Alexander Barus told Petromindo.com on Thursday that the company?s existing power plant capacity of 430 MW will not be sufficient to meet power demand of the NPI smelter with the capacity will increase to 1.2 million tons per year in May of 2017 from the current 900,000 tons per year.

He added that SMI is also doubling the capacity of its stainless steel plant to 2 million tons per year in 2017. About 5 MW of the power plant output will be allocated for the local community via state-owned electricity firm PT PLN.

The US$600 million coal-fired power plant will require nine million tons per year of coal supply with calorific value of 4,000-4,300 kcal/kg GAR. The coal will come from miners in Kalimantan, Alexander said, adding that the plant is targeted to be completed in 2019.
