Sojitz enters venture in S. Sumatra coal mine

Japan's leading trading companies Sojitz Corporation has entered into coal mining venture with South Sumatra coal miner PT Bara Alam Utama (BAU), the company?s official told Petrromindo.Com.
Sojitz has 20 percent share in the mine, the official said without giving details.
BAU plans to increase its coal production to 100,000 per month in the end of this year from 50,000 tonnes per month. BAU has started coal production since mid 2009. BAU?s coal concession is 799 hectares of land in Merapi Barat district, Lahat regency with calorific value of 5,000-5,500 kcal/kg (ADB).
Sojitz has also invested in East Kalimantan coal miner Berau Coal with 10% stake. Sojitz handles export sales from Berau Coal to Japan market.
Berau Coal is Indonesia?s fifth largest producer with targeted total production in 2014 of 30 million metric tonnes from at the present of 20 million tonnes. (denny)
