South Korea?s leading power producer Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) may build a gas-fired power plant in Banten province, using the liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a receiving terminal to be built by the state electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Bloomberg news agency reported on Wednesday.

PLN is planning to build a US$300 million LNG terminal Cilegon, Banten province. It has signed two separate preliminary agreements with Malaysia?s Petroliam Nasional Bhd, and Indonesia?s state oil and gas company PT Pertamina to jointly build the plant.

The terminal is scheduled to start supplying fuel to power plants in Java in 2006. It will have an initial capacity of 400 million cubic feet of gas per day, rising to 1 billion cubic feet a day later.

?KEPCO has met us and discussed their plan to build a power plant near our LNG terminal,? PLN director Ali Herman Ibrahim told reporters in Jakarta

?They?re now seeking the government?s approval,? Ali Herman said.

But Ali Herman didn?t give details on the capacity or costs of KEPCO?s proposed power plant. (*)
