Spanish utility firm ENDESA will import 5 million tonnes of coal per annum from Indonesia starting 2008 to fuel its As Pontes thermal power station in La Coruña.
The company said that it will stop using local high sulphur lignite as the company has embarked on transforming the third group of its 1,400-MW coal-fired power plant.
“Once the transformation has been concluded, the Group will only consume imported coal which will arrive at the new port being built by ENDESA in Ferrol. Through this port, ENDESA will import some five million tonnes of coal from Indonesia every year,” the company said in June 18 statements without revealing supply source.
The transformation of the four units of this plant is extending its working life, improving its environmental efficiency and strengthening the Company's market position. It is the largest power station in Spain, with 1,400 MW.
The transformation of the third unit would be completed in October this year, and then followed by the last unit. (denny)
