Local shipping firm PT.Sparta Samudera Semesta will soon enter coal transportation business by acquiring three sets of tugs and barges to be operated later this year.

Commercial Director Sungkono Ali told Bisnis Indonesia daily that each of the 300-feet barges would have capacity to transport 8,000 tonnes of coal.

Ali said the company formed consortium with an undisclosed South Korean company to procure and operate the barges, which was estimated to worth US$36 million tonnes.

Ali said the barges acquisition was to anticipate Indonesia?s increasing coal production and cabotage regulation that will prohibit non-Indonesian vessel to carry goods from one point to another within the country. (*)
