Star Energy to invest US$200 million in geothermal power plant

Oil and gas company Star Energy will build a 110 MW Wayang Windu Unit II geothermal power plant in West Java, with an investment of US$200 million.

The company?s President Director Supramu Santosa said in Jakarta Monday that Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro is expected to inaugurate the launch of the planned project in Pengalengan, West Java on August 26, 2006.

?This year, we will drill two geothermal wells of the 12 wells,? he said.

According to Supramu, Wayang Windu Unit II is expected to start operation and production by the end of 2007 or early 2008. When started production, Wayang Windu geothermal power plant will have a total capacity of 220 MW, of which 110 MW has been produced by Unit I that has started operation since 2000.

Under geothermal power plant contract, Star Energy will develop geothermal power plant projects in Wayang Windu, West Java, with a total capacity of 400 MW until 2010.

He also said a negotiation is underway with state electricity company PT PLN on the selling power price from the geothremal power plant Wayang Windu II.

?We will likely sign an agreement on the selling power price during the inauguration on August 26. We do not know whether the price will be comparable to Unit I that sells at US$4.9 cent per kwh,? he said.

The power price will be based on the revised power purchase agreement (PPA), he said. (godang)
