Statkraft to build hydro power plants in RI

Norway?s Statkraft, a leading international hydropower company, has expressed interest to develop hydropower plants in Indonesia, said State Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The minister, who is on a visit to four Scandinavian countries including Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Swede, said that Statkraft will visit Indonesia in October to identify a total of 60 dams for potential hydropower plant projects, starting with dams in Java.

She cited as an example that the Jatiluhur Dam in West Java actually has the potential to produce up 600 MW of electricity, but so far only less than 100 MW has been utilized.

She added that other areas outside Java also has huge potential for hydropower plants, such as North Kalimantan, which has up to 6,000 MW potential.
