Straits Asia reports slight decrease in Q2 coal sales

The company reported sales from its Sebuku mine in South Kalimantan decreased sharply during the quarter to 455,000 tonnes from 1.08 MT last year?s same quarter. The company attributed the decrease in Sebuku coal sales to forestry boundary issue.
The company?s Jembayan mine in East Kalimantan, however, recorded increased sales of 1.65MT during the quarter from 1.08MT last year?s same quarter.
The Group?s second quarter 2009 average selling price was US$84.7 per tonne, up from $76.8/tonne in the second quarter of 2008.
Looking ahead, there are early signs that demand is showing signs of recovery as the contract negotiation period for 2010 sales approaches, the company said.
The company also said that the capacity upgrade at Jembayan from 5.5 MTPA to 11 MTPA was completed and commissioned by the end of June 2009, paving the way for further production increases and strong continuing results in the second half of 2009.
Meanwhile, the new wash-plant and other facilities upgrades at Sebuku were also completed and commissioned in the first half of 2009, increasing nominal processing capacity at Sebuku from 4MTPA to 8MTPA. ?As a result Sebuku is also set to increase production substantially as soon as the rezoning is approved and after the mine has been granted all other licenses and permits to mine in the currently restricted areas. That process is expected to take 6 to 9 months after the rezoning is approved.?
