A barge carrying 8,000 tons of coal stranded on the shore of the Kemiren coastal area in Cilacap, Central Java has been successfully evacuated with the help of two tug-boats, Kompas reported on Friday.

The port authority at the Cilacap port said the evacuation of the Gold Trans 320 barge was successfully carried out on Wednesday night. The barge ran aground onto the shore at the Kemiren coastal area due to heavy wind and high waves.

?The evacuation works lasted for about 12 hours amidst bad weather condition impeding the process,? the port?s official Hari Widiyanto said, adding that the barge was evacuated with the help of two tug boats.

The barge which carried coal for the Cilacap power plant was about to anchor at the nearby port when the heavy wind and high waves dragged it onto the shore. (*)
