Submarine tailing placement allowed

Mining companies can place their tailings under the sea if such practices do not contradict existing laws and regulations and if they do not damage the environment of the areas concerned, according to State Minister for Environment Nabiel Makarim.

But Makarim did not explain the laws and regulations which deal with submarine tailing placement when he spoke to reporters on the sidelines of a discussion forum on mining in Jakarta on Tuesday.

His predecessor Sony Keraf disallowed submarine tailing placement systems. (godang)
