Sulawesi power plant may halt operation due to fuel shortage

A diesel power plant in Suppa, South Sulawesi might stop operation within the next few days if state owned oil company Pertamina could not provide additional fuel supply to the power plant, Investor Daily reported on Friday.

"If Pertamina could not provide additional fuel supply within the next six days, one sixth of the South Sulawesi area would not be able to get electricity supply," said an executive of the power plant.

Pertamina said that it could only provide a part of the MFO (marine fuel oil) needs of the Suppa power plant because the existing MFO stocks would be also distributed to other diesel power plants in the province.

"We have only about 1,600 kiloliters (kl) of MFO at storage. We could only supply the Suppa power plant with 600 kl, because the other 1,000 kl would be distributed to other power plant and other consumers," said Mochammad Chatib, an executive of the local office of Pertamina. (*)
