Japan?s Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd (SHI) is seeking to cooperate with Indonesia?s state-owned electricity firm PT PLN to apply its so-called circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler in coal-fired power plants in the country.

PT SHI Indonesia President Director Masaru Ishii was quoted by Antara as saying Tuesday that the CFB boiler technology ensures efficient and stable burning of lower rank coal to fuel power plants.

Speaking following a seminar on CFB boiler technology, he said that the technology has been applied at a 2x30 MW coal-fired power plant owned by mining firm PT Aneka Tambang Tbk in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi Province, and the 2x115 MW coal-fired power plant owned by PT Tanjung Power Indonesia in South Kalimantan.

The planned cooperation with PLN seeks to expand the use of the CFB technology in other power plant projects particularly in Java, hopefully to be implemented in 2018-2019.

The technology will help reduce operating cost of the coal-fired power plants using cheap low rank coal as fuel. (*)
