State-owned electricity firm PT PLN on Tuesday signed a US$28.5-million contract with Japanese firm Sumitomo Corp for the construction of the 20-megawatt Lahendong II geothermal power project in North Sulawesi.

PLN president Eddie Widiono said the construction of the project would be completed 20 months after the signing of the contract or around June 2007. Sumitomo will work together with its subcontractors Fuji Electric System and PT Rekayasa Industri.

The Lahendong II project will be financed with a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Eddie added that the operation of the power project would reduce the fuel oil consumption of PLN's power plants by around 50,000 kiloliters per year, worth about Rp 255 billion. (dino)
