PT Suprabakti Mandiri, a distributor of conveyor belt, has recently started marketing technology that can help deal with fly ash from coal-fired power plants.

General Manager of Suprabakti, Soesanto told Petromindo.com that fly ash can harm the environment and people?s health, and in certain condition can cause fire.

He said that the technology provided by his company can help deal with the fly ash problem from the coal-fired power plants by spraying liquid that can ?catch the ash.?

Suprabakti said that the company has recently started to market the technology to a number of clients operating coal-fired power plants.

The government has acknowledged the negative impact of fly ash from coal-fired power plants. Last year, the Directorate General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), Directorate General for the Management of Waste and Toxic Materials at the Ministry of Forestry and Environmental Affairs, and the Research and Development Agency at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing signed an agreement for cooperation on research and technology application to deal with problems caused by flay ash and bottom ash produced by coal-fired power plants.

As new coal-fired power plants are expected to come on stream in the next few years, coal requirement for the power generation in 2019 is projected to reach 166.2 million tons.

The fly ash and bottom ash production from coal-fired power generation is estimated at about 5 percent of the coal consumption, which translates to a volume of 8.31 million tons in 2019.
