Taiwan?s threat toward Indonesia will not affect LNG exports: Purnomo

Tuesday, December 24 2002 - 03:30 AM WIB

Taiwan?s threat to pull its investments out of Indonesia will not have adverse impact on liquefied natural gas contracts between the two sides, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said Monday as reported by Neraca daily.

?Both Indonesia and Taiwan have mutual, big interest in LNG trade relations. Moreover, they have maintained the relations for quite sometime. Taiwan is one of our largest LNG export destinations,? Purnomo told reporters.

The Taiwanese government recently threatened to pull Taiwanese investments out of Indonesia after the Indonesian government refused a planned visit to the country of Taiwanese president Chen Sui. Indonesia, which holds ?one China? policy, feared that receiving Chen would damage its relations with the People?s Republic of China.

Aside from Taiwan, other largest importers of Indonesia?s LNG are Japan and South Korea. (*)
