Tangguh LNG mega project in Papua vows to meet new environmental ruling

The state oil and gas company Pertamina and its foreign contractor ARCO vow to comply with the new ruling on environmental impact assessment analysis in developing the Tangguh gas project in the Teluk Berau area in Manokwari and Fak-fak regencies, Papua province.

The Kompas daily quoted ARCO Indonesia spokesman Amir Hamzah as saying that the new ruling would minimize social conflict because the greater participation of the local people in the environmental impact assessment activity.

The country's environmental watchdog or Bapedal recently introduced the new ruling No. 8/2000 on environmental impact assessment which will be effective starting November. (*)
