East Kalimantan authorities have given coalminer PT Tanito Harum six months to repair environmental damages in its operational sites, local daily Kaltim Post reported Monday.

The head of the Kutai Kartanegara regency office for environment (Bapedalda), Rini Budi Sayekti, last Thursday met with Tanito officials and ordered them to repair the damages.

On the occasion, Bapedalda officials made presentation about the results of its survey at Tanito?s mining sites. They said that environmental damages were evident on 13 mining locations of the company.

The officials said that Tanito had not done enough to repair the damaged sites. They said some portions of its coal had fallen into the Mahakam River, and that the company had not reclaimed its old mines.

Bapedalda had in May given two other coalminers, PT Multi Harapan Utama and PT Kitadin, six months to repair environmental damages in their mining locations in Kutai Kartanegara.
