Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan led on Thursday a groundbreaking ceremony of the Tanjung Jati B coal-fired power plant (PLTU) expansion project in Central Java, marking the start of its construction.

The ministry said in a statement that the 2x1000 MW PLTU Tajung Jati B unit 5&6, also called the PLTU Jawa 4, is part of the government?s 35,000 MW power plant development program.

The project, located near the Tanjung Jati B unit 1,2,3 and 4 with combined capacity of 4x660 MW in Jepara, is developed by a consortium called PT Bhumi Jati Power (BJP) at an estimated investment of around US$4 billion. Members of the consortium include PT Unitra Persada Energi (a unit of IDX-listed heavy equipment firm PT United Tractors Tbk, 25% interest in the project), Sumitomo Corp (50%) and Kansai Electric Co (25%).

Financial close for the project was made on March 31, 2017. Construction is targeted to be completed in 54 months, with commercial operation date status for unit 5 targeted to be reached in May 2021, and unit 6 in September 2021.

Once completed and starts operation, the PLTU Tanjung Jati B will have a combined capacity of 4,640 MW, one of the largest in Asia, the ministry said in a statement.

The consortium signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with PLN in 2015 for the project to be developed under a built, operate and transfer (BOT) scheme.

The Tanjung Jati B unit 5&6 project will use the ultra-super critical technology.
