State-owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said that its Tanjung Jati B power plant in Central Java has started commissioning this month.

?One unit of the power plant has started commissioning and is expected to come into full operation in June or July,? PLN?s director Djuanda Nugraha Ibrahim said on Thursday.

The coal-fired power plant located in Jepara, Central Java has two power units each with the capacity of 660 MW.

?The other unit is expected to start production next year,? Djuanda said.

The plant is owned by PT Central Java Power (CJP), which is controlled by Japanese trading house Sumitomo. CJP has entered into a 20-year lease contract with PLN, under which PLN is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the power plant during the lease period.

According to Djuanda, the power plant needs four million tons of coal per year.

PLN ?s spokesman Muldjo Adji said the firm has tendered the coal supply contract but the tender committee has thus far only approved the contracts amounting to two million tons and planned to re-tender the contracts for the supply of the remaining two million tons. The re-tendering of the contracts will be held later this month.

?The contracts for the two million coal supply (which have been approved by the tender committee) still need approval from the management,? Muldjo said. (Godang)
