Minister of Energy Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro broke ground on Wednesday to mark the start of construction of an additional combined cycle power plant on the premises of Tanjung Priok power plant in Jakarta.

The new power unit, better known as ?Tanjung Priok Repowering Project?, will expand the capacity of the Tanjung combined cycle power plant by 740 MW from 1300 MW at present.

The construction of the new power plant will be handled by Japanese firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd in a partnership with Indonesian publicly-listed state owned firm PT Wijaya Karya under a 43-months construction contract. The contract period includes 31 months of construction and 12 months of guarantee.

Fahmi Mochtar, the president of state owned electricity firm PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), that owns the Tanjung Priok power plant, said the project is financed with Official Development Assistance (ODA) of Japan provided by Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC).

The new power plant will consume 100 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of natural gas, which is expected to be supplied among others from the floating LNG plant that the consortium of PLN, state owned gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) and state owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina plan to build in Jakarta Bay, Fahmi said.

The new plant will consists of two new gas turbine generators, two new heat recovery steam generators and one new steam turbine generator.

The power plant will use natural gas as fuel but HSD will be used as back up in the event of natural gas supply is disrupted.

Each of the new combined cycle power plant generator will be connected to the new Tanjung Priok power plant?s 150 kV SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) by one 150 kV underground power cable circuit. (godang)
