Tanker's owner demanded to pay Rp 272 billion in compensation

The owner of the King Fisher oil tanker which spilled crude oil in the waters of Cilacap area, south of Central Java several weeks ago after hitting a coral reef was asked to pay Rp 272 billion (US$1=Rp 7,915) in compensation, Suara Merdeka daily reported.
Cilacap mayor Soetrisno Djojowasito said on Thursday the sum was the total demanded by parties who claimed losses due to the accident and oil spill.
State oil and gas company Pertamina demanded Rp 56 billion in compensation, Pertamina, the Tanjung Intan port authorities Rp 697 million, the local fishery office Rp 8 million, the local police Rp 22 million, three district administrations in Cilacap area --- Central, North and South Cilacap districts - a total of Rp 57 million and the non-governmental organizations Rp 3.2 billion.
The local fishermen demanded Rp 68 billion in short-term compensation and Rp 142 billion in long-term compensation.
"The amount of compensation demand is very big? we shall evaluate the date to obtain an accurate and objective figure," he said.
He said the team formed to handle the calculate of amount of the compensation demand was facing difficulties in doing their jobs because all fishermen in the area asked for compensations.
The mayor proposed to scrap some "irrelevant demand" to cut the amount of compensation as under the Civil Liability Convention, the maximum compensation payable by the company was US$18.1 million or Rp 140 billion. (*)
